School history

The beginnings of the school are tied to the activities of the Coal Engineering Heavy Equipment Company established in 1953. This venture decided to create its own training/ educational facility due to the growing training needs in the ’60s. The efforts of the board were successful and led to the foundation act, which was signed by the Deputy Minister of Mining and Energy, Mr. Eryk Porąbka. And then, in 1973, began the first academic year in the history of our school, with headteacher Ms. Stefania Oskręda in charge. The school got its name in 1983. It was agreed that from then on, the facility would be named after Gustaw Morcinek – a Polish writer. The 1991/1992 school year was a breakthrough moment in the history of the institution. By the decision of the Superintendent of Education in Katowice, Mrs. Janina Pillardy- Kozarzewska, two full units were created in the school building: the 4th Comprehensive High School and the Vocational School Complex which included the newly established Mechanical Technical School.
On 1 September 1993, Environmental Protection Technical School was established, and on the same day two years later all school units were transformed into a school complex. In 2003 it got the name of the School Complex No. 1, which now includes the 4th Comprehensive High School and the Technical School No. 1. The school’s mission is to focus on the personal growth of the students. As the words we live by state, ’no matter who you used to be, here you will discover yourself'. Since 2007, all high school classes are under the auspices of educational institutions. In March 2007, our school held one of the most important educational exhibitions in Europe. It focused on the story of Anna Frank. The exhibition was visited by more than 1600 students. In 2018 the school went through a renovation and thermal modernization. Currently, School Complex No. 1 is distinguished by our students’ accomplishments, which you can read about in the ‘Accomplishments’ tab on our website.
